Nurse

Joyce - Vet

What made you decide to be a veterinarian/veterinary nurse?

  • Since birth, I have had animals in my family. When I was 11, my beautiful staffy (Sandy) became unwell & passed away in front of me. At that moment, I really knew that I wanted to help animals. In 2006, I started working full -time in a pet shop, I gained an interest in studying different animals and gained my Certificate III in 2007. After I had my 4th baby, in 2017, I decided that I wanted to go back to studying & move into Veterinary Nursing in 2018.  Although I am currently studying my Bachelor of Medical Science, with the intent to become a Surgeon in Human Medicine, I also don't see myself ever leaving the Vet world!

Which aspect of the job do you love most?

  • I really enjoy doing Dentals, Radiography and especially love scrubbing in to assist with orthopedic surgeries.

Do you have any pets? Tell us something special about your pets!

  • I have 2 dogs: Jack (Australian Kelpie) & Thor (French Bulldog). We adopted Jack from the pound back in 2018 & We fostered Thor & then adopted him in 2022.
  • We also have 5 cats: Kimba (Ragdoll) who we fostered and then adopted in 2022. We also have Loki, Xavier, River & Phoenix who were all stray kittens whom we have adopted over time. We recently had Simba who was surrendered to the clinic as a mature cat in 2021. Simba passed away early in 2024. He was a very special ginger cat. We were so lucky to get the opportunity to love and care for him in his final years of life.
  • Finally, I have 2 Pygmy bearded dragons who we are fostering. Rex & Rap.

What are your favourite activities for your spare time?

  •   With 4 kids, I don't really get "spare time". I do really enjoy spending time with my family on the weekend. Aside from the multiple sporting activities, We usually go on spontaneous road trips on the weekends, camping and bushwalking. I'm very lucky to live in the hills district where we are surrounded by some really beautiful forests to go walking in.
  • Until my back injury a few years ago, I also played ice hockey & practiced Taekwondo. I recently started skating again and I am hoping to get back into Ice hockey soon!

If you could be an animal, what would you be and why?

  •  I wasn't sure, So, I did a quiz which told me that I am a wolf. So, I'll go with a Wolf.
